INVERCLYDE’S 'most dangerous' area can now be revealed after Police Scotland published crime data for 2024.

Statistics released by the force break down every incident recorded as a crime last year by officers.

This means that police have assessed the incident and have determined that an offence has been committed.

Across Inverclyde, a total of 2,034 crimes were recorded by police in the last calendar year.

Multiple crimes may arise out of one incident, meaning several offences may have been committed by one person simultaneously.

As well as providing the wider picture, Police Scotland has also broken down statistics by the Inverclyde Council ward they occurred in.

The data shows that the ‘most dangerous’ area of Inverclyde was Inverclyde North – the council ward which covers much of Greenock town centre and the west end, with 436 crimes recorded in 2024.

The ward with the next highest number of recorded crimes was Inverclyde Central, which covers eastern parts of Greenock.

Inverclyde East Central ward – which includes the majority of Port Glasgow – was third with 325 recorded crimes, while Inverclyde South, which covers southern areas of Greenock such as Cowdenknowes, Ravenscraig and Penny Fern, saw 270 crimes recorded.

Inverclyde South West, comprised of Inverkip and Wemyss Bay, as well as south western parts of Greenock like Braeside, Branchton and Larkfield.

The two wards with the lowest number of crimes were Inverclyde East, which includes Kilmacolm, Quarriers Village and the eastern parts of Port Glasgow, and Inverclyde West, which covers Gourock.

The two wards had 226 and 153 crimes recorded respectively.

A total of 33 crimes recorded in 2024 had their ward listed as ‘other/unknown’, which is the designation used when there is insufficient location information to allocate grid references to a crime or offence.

Figures do, however, paint a different picture when area population is taken into account.

When crimes recorded are adjusted per 10,000 population, Inverclyde East Central becomes the ‘most dangerous’ area. According to the National Records of Scotland population data, the ward has 9,321 residents.

The ward has approximately 348 crimes recorded per 10,000 population, higher than the 324 per 10,000 population rate recorded in the more populous Inverclyde North ward.
